Vegan tuna salad (made from chick peas)

A delicious alternative to a tuna salad. And no it doesn't taste like tuna but you can use the same way and it does resemble it a bit in terms of texture and looks

The vegan alternative to tuna is this delicious vegan tuna salad. In all honestly, it does not taste like tuna, but it is still a worthy alternative and definitely tasty!

I saw this recipe on the Youtube channel of Bonny Rebecca, which now has apparently changed quite a lot. She used to be vegan and had lots of vegan recipes, but due to health issues she and her boyfriend moved away from veganism. Anyway, that’s totally irrelevant to this recipe so it’s delicious no matter how you’re eating (and I’m certainly no vegan either)

Does vegan tuna salad taste like tuna?

Well no, it does not. We’ve got to be honest here. In terms of looks and in terms of texture it might resemble tuna in some distant way, but overall it is quite a good mix to eat. And at the end of the day that is all that counts right?

How to make the vegan tuna salad?

Now for making the salad you use chickpeas. From a can. So rinse them well and mash them a bit. You can use a fork for that. That should work well. Once the chickpeas are mashed you add the other chopped elements to it. Mix with the dressing and spread on a sandwich.

Add some mayonnaise

Now you might now I am a big fan of mayonnaise which is obviously not vegan. But you can use vegan mayonnaise which I think would be a good addition to the recipe below. I’ll definitely be using that for next time, to make it a bit more creamier.

Ingredients

  • 1 can chickpeas drained and half mashed
  • 2 gherkins in small cubes
  • 2 tomatoes slices in small pieces
  • grated carrot
  • handful of sunflower seeds roasted
  • 4 slices sour dough bread for serving

Dressing:

  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 3 tbsp tahini
  • 1/2 tbsp maple syrup
  • pinch salt

How to make the vegan tuna salad

  1. After you’ve mashed the chickpeas add the other chopped elements to it and mix well.
  2. Make the dressing by combining the ingredients well and pour over the salad.
  3. Take a good sandwich,  and spread the “tuna” salad on top. I added some greens to it as well, added the other half of my sandwich and dive in!
