Vegan french toast

The very first time I made this vegan French toast was at a period in my life where I wanted to try and see how it would be to eat vegan for at least 30 days. So I started experimenting with eating things that didn’t contain any animal products. And of course, a normal version of French toast would have eggs, butter and milk. So the question was: can I make something similar but without all that?

The short answer to that question is yes, you can. There are a few things to keep in mind which will make the end result somewhat different. First of all, you’re not using any eggs so that eggy taste that you get with a normal French toast is not there. But most importantly – for any french toast – is the flavor of the milk. And with flavor I mean the added spices. Yes the milk itself does provide taste but at the end of the day you will want the spices to shine through.

Spices for your vegan French toast

Now you can go for simplicity and use a pre-mixed mixture like gingerbread spice for flavoring the milk. Or you can simply use things like cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg and/or cloves . Those will all work well. You mix the milk with the spices and soak the bread like you normally would. Don’t let it sit for too long, but just briefly dip both sides of the bread.

You can bake the vegan French toast in either plant-based butter or use oil. I have tried both and find that while both will work, I prefer the plant based butter as that gives a crunchier end result. Serve the vegan French toast with the fresh strawberries and a light dusting of icing sugar.

Making a french toast vegan is really no rocket science. And it’s 100% of the flavor and non of the animal products
