Slow cooker pulled pork

Making a slow cooker pulled pork is really super easy. I know that technically you should caramelize the meat before adding it to the slow cooker as that is giving it more flavor but I never do so. I simply place the raw, uncooked meat in the bowl of the slow cooker and add all the other ingredients as well. Wait for a couple of hours and the meat will be fall apart tender. Absolutely perfect for your next pulled pork sandwich.

What goes into the slow cooker?

For the meat I use pork shoulder or pork neck. Now cuts of meat can be called very different in different parts of the world. The pork shoulder is often referred to as boston butt or pork butt. But if you’re unsure how it is called where you live just ask the butcher. I’m sure they’ll be able to help you out if you tell them you’re going to make a pulled pork.

The meat goes in without cutting it. So you just place the entire large piece of meat in the bowl of the slow cooker and add all the other stuff on top. I chose a combination of chicken stock, barbecue sauce, white wine vinegar, mustard, onions, garlic, salt, cayenne pepper and smoked paprika.

Wait for 5-6 hours

Once you’ve put all your ingredients into the slow cooker the waiting game begins. You can make a delicious coleslaw in the mean time which is the best accompaniment for a slow cooker pulled pork if you ask me. And while you’re waiting you can make some barbecue sauce as well or any other sauce you like.

I do check the contents of the slow cooker every few hours. After about 4 hours or so you should be able to pull at least some of the meat apart with two forks. I do that while the meat it still in the slow cooker. I simply open the lid, take two forks and start pulling. That helps to break down the thicker parts of the cut.

Once the meat is all fallen apart or pulled apart the slow cooker pulled pork is ready for consumption. Check if you need extra salt and or pepper and serve!

Why not cut the pork before adding to the slow cooker?

You might wonder why I do not cut the meat before adding it to the slow cooker. Simply put, the texture of the meat changes if you cut it into cubes and you want those strands. So no cutting!

Can I also prepare this in a regular pan?

Yes you can also make the pulled pork in a regular pan but make sure you check the liquid contents more often. In the slow cooker you don’t need as much but in a regular pan it will evaporate so make sure you have some extra stock ready to go if needed. It will also take a little bit shorter but check how things are progressing.
