A delicious gluten free apple crumble that is made a little differently than a “standard” crumble recipe. It is actually a cross between an apple pie and an apple crumble. Very easy to make and delicious with a scoop of ice cream!
Gluten Free Apple Crumble
Ah, the humble crumble. I can really enjoy them. My favorite fruit crumble depends a bit on the season, but this cherry crumble is great, as is the plain apple crumble. Can be made all year round if you ask me. This time I made a gluten-free apple crumble. Which, by the way, is a little different from the usual. With a standard crumble, you put the fruit in a bowl and then spread the crumble topping on top. In this case, you mix everything together and spread it out on a baking sheet or in a large baking dish. Slightly different crisp recipe but so good!
By the way, it is not very complicated to make a crumble gluten-free. The standard mix is usually all purpose flour, sugar and unsalted butter. Sometimes there is oatmeal in it, but in most cases you can easily make a crumble gluten-free by substituting almond meal or buckwheat flour for the regular flour. Or any other kind of gluten-free flour blend. It will work regardless.
Extra crumble
But back to this gluten-free apple crumble, which – and I think this is another bonus point – has more crumble because the layer is thin. Yummy! You don’t actually make a separate crumble layer here like you’re used to, but if you want to add more crunch, a topping with some extra nuts on top is a good idea. Chopped almonds are a good choice for the crisp topping. Do keep in mind that this one is different from a regular crumble.
Don’t want to use almonds? You can replace the almond flour with chufa, for example. This also has a nice nutty effect without being a real nut. Chufa is less sweet than almond flour, though, so check if you want to add some extra sweetener or a little bit of brown sugar in the mix.
Vegan and gluten-free apple crisp
The thing that is not vegan in this recipe is the honey and the eggs. Now I have not tried making this vegan myself but you could try and make this into a vegan recipe by swapping the honey for maple syrup (easy fix) and the eggs for a flax egg or use banana instead of the eggs. Banana has a binding capacity as well and should work in this recipe. But again; haven’t tried this yet!
Questions asked about this gluten free apple crumble
Honestly it doesn’t matter what apples you use for this recipe. I’ve made it with granny smith apples, honey crisp, pink lady apples or other sweet apples. So the best apple to use is the one you really like.
I used cinnamon and cardamom here, which I absolutely love, but you can use a ginger bread spices mix here too or other warm spices like ginger to make it slightly different.
Yes you absolute can. If you cannot find arrowroot you can substitute for tapioca or use a bit of corn starch. It is mostly used for thickening the fruit juices that come out of the apples.
You can store the gf apple crumble in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days or cover with plastic wrap. You can reheat it in the oven covered with aluminum foil if you want. If not reheated it is best to serve at room temperature.
