Easy garlic sauce
Garlic sauce is one of those sauces that I make all the time, but don’t really think about for long. But with the barbecue season in full swing, I thought it would be an ideal recipe to share with you. Because this is the ultimate easy garlic sauce recipe that goes with so many different things. Simple ingredients and almost no time at all. For all the sauce recipes check here or check all the barbecue recipes here. My latest addiction is gorgonzola sauce but this garlic sauce is a great second!
Cold preparation
Now the good thing about this simple garlic sauce is that you don’t need to use any heat. And not having to fire up the stove during the hot months of the year is a bonus if you ask me. I use raw garlic, yogurt and mayonnaise for this recipe. It doesn’t get any easier.
The great thing about this garlic sauce is that there is no heat involved. You make it with raw garlic, yogurt and mayonnaise. Super easy. I have added chives here because I like them myself. It’s not a must, of course, but it adds an extra dimension to the garlic sauce. You can also add a splash of lemon juice or add a bit of olive oil. It also depends on wether you’re using this as a dipping sauce or for use on your favorite steak.
How many cloves of garlic?
Raw garlic can be quite intense, but no less than 5 cloves go into the sauce. It’s called garlic sauce for a reason! If you are not a fan of a lot of garlic, you can of course reduce it. You could roast the garlic before adding it to the sauce but you will lose some of the sharpness.
How long in advance can you make the garlic sauce?
Here comes the fun part. Don’t make this sauce days in advance. Make it fresh the night or day you want to use it. If you leave it too long, the garlic will become more intense. And this is exactly the kind of sauce that tastes best when made fresh. You can still keep it in an airtight container if you want, just don’t make it too soon. Of course, you can prepare all the ingredients in advance and mix and crush the garlic (garlic press is easiest) at the last minute.
Lactose free garlic sauce
I used plain Greek yogurt for this recipe. But if you don’t want to eat yogurt, you can use coconut yogurt or any other plant-based yogurt. Just check the taste carefully, because you don’t want the coconut flavor to overpower it. Unless you really like it. If you’re using it you can also use unsweetened soy yogurt as well.
Vegan garlic sauce
If you want to make a vegan garlic sauce, this is also very easy. All you have to do is replace the yoghurt with plant-based yogurt and the mayonnaise with vegan mayonnaise. It’s as simple as that. As a vegan mayo tends to be sweeter, taste it carefully and add a little more salt if necessary. Replace the honey with maple syrup or similar.
What can you use garlic sauce for
This easy garlic sauce recipe is perfect with a nice piece of meat. Think stuffed pork tenderloin, leg of lamb or a nice ham. But it is also perfect with baked potatoes. And for the barbecue, it goes with almost anything you put on it. Also try it with these beer battered mushrooms. So good!
Tips and tricks
Now even while this easy garlic sauce is – as the name would suggest – really easy, you can make it more elaborate if you want to. I like adding some red pepper flakes to it. That not only looks good, but adds a bit of heat too. If you do not have fresh garlic cloves available you can also make this with garlic powder. Taste while adding it as the taste can be quite different. For an extra creamy garlic sauce recipe you can use only the mayonnaise. Totally an option. You can also spread the garlic sauce over a pizza crust and bake it in the oven.
Adding some other fresh herbs is also delicious. I like my garlic sauce with the mentioned chives, but you can also add basil, oregano or fresh parsley. If you’re using minced garlic, make sure it is fine enough as you don’t want bit chunks.
Easy garlic sauce
Ingredients
- 5 cloves garlic
- 200 gr Greek yogurt full-fat
- 100 gr mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp chives finely chopped
- pepper and salt
- 2 tsp honey
How to make the garlic sauce
- Start by pressing the garlic cloves. You can use a garlic press for this but you can also grate it. Slicing is too coarse so prefer a press or grater.
- Add the yogurt and mayonnaise and mix well. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Cut the chives and add a bit of honey. This makes the flavor slightly less strong, but is optional to use.
