How to make an Italian affogato recipe at home

The ultimate Italian version of an ice coffee. Rich and creamy vanille ice cream poured with strong espresso and served with amaretti cookies

Now that summer is finally here making this affogato recipe is the ultimate delicious ice coffee. Or it’s actually more ice cream with hot coffee. This delicious Italian dessert is my favorite summer drink, but you can easily drink it all year long. Would work miracles at Christmas time too! Imagine serving this after Christmas dinner.

Affogato

What is affogato I hear you wander? Well simply put, it is a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a shot of hot espresso. The ice cream is placed inside a small bowl or a glass and you pour espresso over the ice cream. This will melt the ice of course but will give you a lovely creamy taste. You can enhance it further with a shot of liqueur, caramel sauce or add some vanilla beans to the coffee (or a little splash of vanilla paste)

For those who are curious; the word ‘affogato’ literally means ‘drowned’. Makes sense, as you literally drown the ice cream in the coffee!

Ingredients for affogato

Which licor would work well with affogato?

Anything you like really, but the classic affogato is usually served with something like amaretto, frangelico or rum. My favorite is absolutely amaretto (and if you’re an amaretto fan like me make sure to also test the tiramisu with amaretto too. Irish cream or hazelnut liqueur will also work quite well and I am sure a few other drinks you can think of will be worth trying fi you are looking for a more boozy affogato.

Affogato is one of those things that everyone suddenly seemed to be talking about. It is served in fancy restaurants for dinner, it’s used for special occasions (think Christmas, Easter, spring break, birthdays) or just because you feel like having one. The easiest dessert for coffee lovers for sure.

How to eat (or drink) affogato?

Is it a drink or is it a dessert? Or is a drinkable dessert? It’s the perfect combination between bitter coffee and sweet ice cream. You can spoon it up but you can also drink it. The ice cream will easily melt with the hot coffee, so if you leave it for too long it will have melted completely. So if you want to use a spoon? Dig in right away. Want to drink it? Just wait a few seconds for the ice cream to melt. That’s the magic of affogato!

Which ice cream goes with affogato?

Traditionally the best ice cream for Italian affogato is creamy vanilla ice cream, but the sky is the limit. Any flavor of ice cream that you feel will work with coffee? You can use that for sure. Adding some chocolate shavings (dark chocolate will work best!) is also delicious. And adding chocolate ice cream to that is for the true chocolate lovers.

What to serve with this coffee dessert

I love serving affogato with small biscotti or amaretto cookies. Less traditional but also good are oreo cookies.

What other affogato toppings can you use?

Other than the aforementioned chocolate shavings you can also use chopped hazelnuts, crumbled cookies or whipped cream.
