Warm oats with pears, cinnamon and star anise

The time for the recipe is quite short but I included the overal time for cooking and preparing the poached pears

In between all the christmas stuff it seemed like a good moment in time to think about a delicious wintery breakfast. You’ve probably seen heaps of recipes for overnight oats passing by and truth be told, I do like overnight oats. But I don’t like the fact that it is rather cold now as it comes out of the fridge. Not so nice in winter time. Delicious for a summery breakfast though but in winter time I prefer my breakfast to be a tiny bit warmer. And warming up overnight oats just sounds wrong.

So time to make some instant oats with wintery flavors. For me that usually ends up being something with cinnamon, staranis, cloves…. Put the three together and I start signing Christmas carols straight away. Normally you have to cook oatmeal of course because the oats are too hard otherwise but Wouter from Yoghurt Barn came up with a good idea to blend the oats first in a blender, stick blender or kitchen processor. That will make it much finer and creates an instant oatmeal.

Pour hot foamy milk on top, add fresh ingredients and you’re good to go.

That way you have all the joys of a bowl of hot oats but it’s literally ready in a few minutes. In my case you do have to have those poached pears ready of course but it will also be quite good with a fresh banana or apple or something similar. I poached the pears with cinnamon, star anis and ginger and a bit of cardemom. I added some of those flavors also to the oats. It goes together really well with roasted nuts (walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts), raisins, coconut, pieces of dark chocolate, cranberry sauce.. the list is endless.

Warm oats with poached pears and winter spices

Prep time 10 minutes
Cooking time 40 minutes
Total time 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • oats
  • milk
  • 5 poaching pears
  • 100 gram sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 pcs of star anis
  • piece of ginger about 10 cm
  • cranberry juice about 500 ml
  • pecan nuts handful chopped
  • cardemom 3 pods, bruised
  • For serving:
  • honey
  • dark chocolate
  • pecans

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pears ideally a day or a few hours before you want to eat your oats. You can eat them warm or cold. Whichever suits you best.
  2. I usually prefer my pears to be poached in red wine but I kind of felt that would be wrong for breakfast (although we could for christmas right?) so I used cranberry juice instead. Cook the pears with the spices until done.
  3. While the pears are cooking you prepare your oats. Put the flakes into a stick blender bowl and blend until you have a fine mixture. Grab a bowl and put the oats in.
  4. Once you're ready to eat, heat your milk and whisk so you have a nice foamy mixture. Add the hot milk to your oats and stir well. Decorate with the pears, pecans, chocolate bits and honey. You can finish by adding a bit of cinnamon over the top.
