Halloween mummy tortilla

Ah Halloween! It’s funny that Halloween has become more of thing here in the Netherlands over the recent years. It hasn’t been all that long ago that no one really knew what Halloween was all about and even though it will probably never be as big of a thing as it is in the US, I still think it is funny. We try to create a couple of Halloween proof recipes every year although it doesn’t always work out. This particular kid proof recipe is easy to make and fun to do with the kids too.

Easy to make

These halloween mummy mummy tortilla’s are so much fun to make. This time we made them with tortilla wraps but you could make a sweet version as well if you wanted with small pancakes. That would be fun to do too. Kids will love making these for sure, but you can easily make an adult version as well.

Building the mummy tortilla

Making the mummies is really super easy to do. You need small mini tortilla’s. One is the base of the mummy, the other is sliced into thin strips to act as the mummy parts.

You need green olives with pepper inside (or add little red pepper flakes yourself) and corn which will act as the teeth. You make the filling or topping with ground meat. I just used some spices I had lying around but pepper and salt would do the trick as well.

You spread a bit of tomato ketchup on the whole tortilla’s, add the prepared ground meat and at the thin strips of tortilla like it would be mummy bandages. Leave some space for the eyes and the teeth and you’re done!

Halloween mummy tortilla’s

Prep time 5 minutes
Cooking time 10 minutes
Total time 15 minutes
Servings6 portions

Ingredients

  • 12 mini tortilla’s
  • 300 grams ground meat
  • 2 tsp spice mix of your choice Or just use pepper and salt
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 100 grams grated cheese
  • few jar olives
  • small can of corn you won't need the whole can
  • ketchup

How to make the mummy tortilla

  1. Preheat the oven to 200˚C (400˚F)
  2. Grab a large frying pan and heat a bit of oil. Bake the onion until translucent. Add the meat and the spices and bake until the meat is cooked through.
  3. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Set aside while you cover a baking tray with baking paper. Place 6 mini tortilla’s on it. Cut the other 6 into strips. Place them to the side.
  5. Spread some ketchup on the whole tortilla’s. Divide the ground meat with the onion over this. Liberally sprinkle with grated cheese.
  6. Now place the cut strip of the tortilla over the cheese and make sure you leave some space for eyes and teeth. The teeth are made with the corn and the eyes are olive slices with a bit of ketchup. You add the teeth and eyes after baking.
  7. Place the baking tray in the oven and bake for about 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
