Delicious deep fried hot dog recipe

What you need for the fried hot dog recipe

This was once a so called dudefood recipe. We had a dudefood tuesday where Tom, my now ex boyfriend made delicious “dudefood” Over the course of the past years it turns out that those recipes are still worth saving but the post needed a major make-over. So here is the rebranded fried hot dog recipe which is every bit as good as the original.

So what you need for the fried hot dog recipe?

  • Hot dog buns
  • chicken hot dogs
  • Spring onions
  • bean sprouts
  • eggs
  • all purpose flour
  • sparkling water
  • bottle of cold beer
  • bit of milk
  • fennel seeds
  • curry powder
  • chives
  • sun flower oil for deep frying

How to make the fried hot dogs

Making the fried hot dogs is not complicated but you do need a bit more work than you would for an average hot dog. And there are more elements to this crazy dog than just the sausages so stay tuned on how to make them. But first let’s talk about the hot dogs them selves. In order to make a deep fried hot dog it is essential that you make sure that there is no excess moisture on the dogs. Use paper towels to dry them properly. I used chicken sausages but you can use any kind you like. I wanted big ones so I opted for special ones I bought from the Turkish super market. Go for the best quality you can find. That’s always a good idea.

Once the hot dogs are dry you can set them aside while you work on the rest of the recipe. Apart from the hot dogs you also make an egg net to wrap around the hot dogs plus you have some added things like spring onions and bean sprouts. 

Making the batter

For the batter you spice the all purpose flour a bit so you have some added flavor there. You add a bit of garlic powder, pepper and salt and optional some chili powder. Mix the dry ingredients. Add some ice cold sparkling water to the flour and whisk to a smooth paste. A little bit of beer will give it extra flavor. Think about adding one or two tablespoons of beer (optional) Place the batter in a shallow bowl or a large bowl (large enough to fit the hot dogs) In another bowl add one egg and whisked it. 

Making the egg net

Let me first start by saying that you can totally skip this step. It does add flavor but you can replace the egg net with a thinly baked omelette. I think the egg net makes it almost a bit of a fancy fried hot dog. And it looks funky too.

You mix the other two eggs with about 2 tbsp of milk, curry powder, ground fennel and pepper and salt. Making the egg net is easiest with a small squeeze bottle, but if you don’t have one you can use a spoon. You heat a large frying pan on medium-high heat with a bit of olive oil and once hot you squeeze the egg in. Now you form a pattern inside the pan. Work quickly as the egg will cook really fast since it is so thin. You don’t have to turn the other side so just cook it and let it slide out of the pan.

Now it is time to heat the vegetable oil to 180˚C (350˚F) Drag your hot dog first through the flour, then through the egg and last through the batter.  Add the dogs to the hot oil and bake until golden brown. That shouldn’t take too long so stay with it. Keep in mind that the hot dogs are already cooked, it’s just the outside layer you want to crisp up till you have a crispy dog. Quite frankly this is very similar to a homemade corn dog, except that you don’t have the dog on a stick. (but you could if that makes it easier) For a homemade corn dog recipe you make a cornmeal batter which tends to be somewhat different.

For this fried hot dog recipe I’ve used a tempura style batter which is lighter and I think crispier than the cornmeal batter. But if you have a cornbread batter you prefer you can definitely use that as well. Homemade corn dogs are next on my list of things to try.

It’s an easy dinner recipe although you might want to add some greens to it!

​Serving

For serving the fried hot dogs you take a hot dog bun and you put some peanut butter on one end. Optionally spread the other half of the bun with a spicy sauce like harissa. Wrap the fried hot dog inside the egg net and place in the bun. Top with the spring onions and the bean sprouts and serve hot.

Ingredients

  • 4 Hotdog buns
  • 4 chicken hot dogs or regular ones

Batter

  • 100 gram flour
  • 1/2 tsp dried garlic
  • 120 ml sparkling water ice cold
  • ½ tbsp dried chives
  • 2 tbsp beer optional
  • Pepper
  • Salt

For dipping the hot dogs

  • 30 g flour
  • 1 tbsp dried chives
  • pepper and salt
  • 1 egg whisked

Egg net

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp ground fennel
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • Sunflower oil for frying

For serving

  • 3 spring onions thinly sliced
  • Peanut butter

How to make the fried hot dogs

  1. Heat a small saucepan ( but large enough to fit the size of the chicken sausages) to 180˚ C (350˚F) with the sunflower oil
  2. Cut the spring onions in small diagonal pieces. Remove the sausages from the can and leave to drain in a sieve. Pat dry with kitchen paper.
  3. Measure 30 gr of flour (about 3 tablespoons) and add this together with one tbsp of the dried chives and some pepper and salt in a deep plate. Whisk one egg in another plate. In a third plate you add the 100 grams of flour, the icecold sparkling water and a splash of beer to a light batter. Sprinkle another half tbsp of the dried chives through the batter.
  4. Whisk the two remaining eggs together with the milk, curry, ground fennel seeds and some pepper and salt to an egg mixture. Add the mixture into a squeeze bottle and if you don't have that use a big tablespoon for pouring the egg nets into the frying pan.
  5. In a hot pan (preferably non-stick) ad a little bit of oil and then make an egg net by pouring or squeezing horizontal and vertical lines which make up the net. Bake them like any egg but don’t turn as they break easily and are thin enough so they should cook through.
  6. Drag your sausages through the flour, whisked egg and the batter at the end and fry in the hot oil for about 3 minutes. Don’t add more than two at the time, or they will stick together. Once they have a crispy layer leave to drain on a piece of kitchen paper.
  7. Cut open your hot dog bun and spread one side with peanut butter (optionally spread the other side with harissa). Wrap the egg net around the fried hotdog and put on the bun. Finish with spring onion.
  8. Delicious with sweet chili sauce and some prawn crackers on the side.

    This is literally mind-blowing! Growing up in the South, I was pretty sure I had come across every possible fried item. Fried Oreos…fried Twinkies… But fried hot dogs? New one! And now I can’t stop thinking about it. I love dudefood, and this definitely needs to show up in my kitchen ASAP!!

  3. The ingredients in this hot dog sent my head spinning. I think I’d love these. It took me a minute to figure out archive cabinet but then I realised it’s a filing cabinet to me. I do remember Hong Kong Phooey. 🙂
