Awa di lamunchi recipe (lime water)

The summer drink of Curacao! This refreshing lime lemonade is super easy to make and perfect for hot and sweltering days!

If you’ve ever been to the tropical island of Curaçao you have probably heard of awa di lamunchi. Literally translated to lime water. It’s usually very sweet but with the weather as hot as it tends to be there it can be a very welcome refreshment. And by making it yourself you can use less sugar.

Awa di lamunchi

Aqua lime (awa di lamunchi) – national drink of Curacao?

I like to think this is the national drink of Curaçao but not sure if that is actually the case. I love it! Depending on where you are on the island you might get some varieties that are sweeter than others. The base of this refreshing drink is – as the name suggests – lime juice. It is definitely one of Curacao tradional recipes. Like the arepa di pampuna.

Nice and fresh

When you’re on the island, you’re likely to be sweating more than you think. You easily lose a couple of liters of sweat a day. Making sure you drink enough is therefore pretty important. One way to do that is to drink water. Which is obviously the best way. But once in a while it is delicious to change things up a bit. And a nice sweet drink every once in a while is delicious. Most restaurants, bars and cafes on Curacao will have it. Just ask for awa di lamunchi and pretty sure you’ll get this easy drink served.

Making it at home

Of course, you can easily make awa di lamunchi at home. All you need to make this tropical drink is lime, sugar and water. It is nice if the water is really cold, either from the refrigerator or served with ice cubes. A slice of lime on top of the glass also makes it look pretty.

You can adjust the amount of sugar to your liking. I don’t necessarily have to have a mega-sweet drink, but you don’t want just lime in the water either. You need a little bit of sugar to make it drinkable. Just taste and adjust. If you don’t want to use sugar, you can also easily replace it with another sweetener of your choice.

And, while definitely not the same as a trip to a tropical island, drinking a glass of this lime lemonade transfers me back to Curacao for just a little bit. Try for yourself and see if it works.. 🙂
