Asian burgers with sticky rice

Delicious burgers with an Asian twist. Serve with green mango salad and sticky rice!

These delicious Asian burgers are easy to make but taste so different from your regular burger that you will want to try it!

What makes a burger Asian you can wonder. For me it is the addition of typical Asian flavors. Fish sauce, ginger, galangal, lemon grass. I love flavors like that. Obviously this is in no way a traditional Asian burger or even one that they would make anywhere in Asia, but it’s my take on it.

I made these burgers when Esmee and I had one of your cooking sessions. Apart from the burgers we also made sticky rice and a green mango salad. With mango that wasn’t so green but still very delicious.

I chose to make the sticky rice before and then bake it shortly before eating.

Now baking sticky rice is not like any regular kind of rice. You can’t really stir it like you would normal rice. But if you flatten the rice in a frying pan and bake it until it gets crispy on one side before turning over, you have something like a rice burger to go with the Asian burger.

But if you flatten the rice in your pan and bake it crispy on one side before turning it over to bake the other side, it is actually really good.

For making the burgers I grind the shallots and the lemon grass in a pestle and mortar. Obviously you can also do this in a small food processor. That is actually easier to make and will make for a finer paste. But both are possible depending on your kitchen equipment.

The hamburgers are nice and spicy and because of the lemongrass and the fish sauce it is also really asian in taste and nothing like your every day hamburger.

Asian hamburgers with sticky rice

Ingredients

  • 3 red Asian shallots coarsely chopped
  • 1 lemongrass sereh stalk, white part only, grated or chopped
  • 500 gr ground meat we used half porc/half beef
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 60 ml fish sauce
  • 6 spring onions chopped

How to make the Asian burgers

  1. For making the burgers put your shallots and lemongrass into a pestle and mortar and ground this to a rough paste. Place the paste into a mixing bowl and add the other ingredients. Mix it all well and turn it into 4-6 small hamburgers.
  2. Heat a grillpan or frying pan and bake the hamburger on both side in about 3-4 minutes per side.
  3. Serve the Asian burgers with rice and a green mango salad.
